Saturday Comic

Today’s comic is the Blondie strip from August 20.

I modified the last panel just a tad in order to make it a bit
more appropriate.

On the Beach

When I found out I was going to Costa Rica for my niece’s wedding, I read a lot of stuff that said that the beach, with darker volcanic sand, was pretty hot. It was also the time of year that the sun was heading directly overhead on its way back south. So that’s when I decided to try baking myself a Seri Boot.

Here’s the result, along with a description of a hike I took along the beach.

OSHA Fines Home Depot $150,700

My post on this news story hasn’t turned out the way I thought it was going to.

I thought it was going to be about schadenfreude.

Let me finish up the wildlife we saw on our tour on the Tempisque River in Palo Verde National Park in Costa Rica.

Part 1 was here.

Barefoot in Costa Rica

In Barefoot to Costa Rica I covered flying to Costa Rica and the stay in the resort. Today I thought I’d talk about going barefoot on the tours I took, and what I saw among the people of Costa Rica.

Tourism is very big in Costa Rica. Very, very big. And part of tourism is taking tours. Which I did.

One of them was on a boat in the Palo Verde National Park.

Barefoot to Costa Rica

I spent the last week in Costa Rica for my niece’s wedding. I guess destination weddings are getting pretty popular. With everybody living so far apart, you still need airfare and a hotel, so why not go to a resort somewhere?

And a beach wedding sure does encourage bare feet, doesn’t it?

Folks may recall that I did a bunch of training hikes over the winter. These were training hikes by John O’Meara, the Executive Director of the Columbus Metro Parks.

He was training to climb Mt. Everest.

Baking a Seri Boot

What can you do if you want to toughen up your feet? I wasn’t too thrilled with the results I got when I tested Tuf-Foot.

Of course, the tried and true way is to do a lot of hiking over rough terrain . . . if you don’t get too footsore to continue.

But here’s another idea.

Tuf-Foot

Barefooters sometimes wonder what they can do to toughen up their feet. There is a product out there, called Tuf-Foot that claims to do so.

I like the product; I’m just not sure it really does much.

Touching the Earth

Here’s an excerpt from Land of the Spotted Eagle, by Chief Luther Standing Bear, an Oglala Lakota. He lived from 1868 to 1939.

This reminds us of our closeness to the earth, and how bare feet are important to that.

Up, Up, and Away

When this appears on my blog I’ll be up in the air on my way to Costa Rica for my niece’s wedding. The resort there has really lousy internet access, so I’m not even bothering to bring my computer.

However, I have some posts prescheduled for when I’m away, so keep tuning in here. The only thing you might notice is if you are a new commenter. I have things set that first-timers have to be approved, so if you comment on a posting, it probably won’t appear until next week. (This does not apply to anybody who has commented in the past—that’ll go right through.)

We’ll see how things go with the airline. I know there are folks who’ve managed to fly barefoot a lot, but I seem to have pretty bad luck getting onto the plane. I’ve had flight attendants see my bare heels from the back while heading down the aisle and come chasing after me. So we’ll see.

I am happy to report that the Arts, Beats & Eats Festival in Royal Oak, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit) has finally changed the FAQ on their web page. Bare feet are not longer prohibited.

But there is another related issue I’d like to write about.
