This weekend’s comic strip comes from Tiger. It’s from August 2 of 2004.

Hey, that’s as good of a answer as any!

Barefoot Boggin’

I had a chance to do a bit of a bushwhack, make that a bogwhack, the other day.

Of course, if you are sloggin’ through a bog, bare feet are best.

Eagle

I’m up in northern Wisconsin. The place where I’m staying has had bald eagles in residence for quite a while. In fact, I got a few long-distance shots of juveniles just this summer, as part of Cove Fauna.

I had one pose for me yesterday afternoon.

William S. Hamilton was one of Alexander Hamilton’s sons. I don’t think he was a barefooter, but he didn’t have qualms about going barefoot when it made sense.

He’s mentioned in an article in an 1866 Harpers New Monthly Magazine related to the time he spent working at lead mining in southwest Wisconsin.

Here’s what it says:

It’s That Time of Year

Autumn’s here. And for some reason that means that the big spiders are out.

So here’s a few pictures of one on my deck.

Saturday Comic

Since last week we were scandalized by a B.C. comic, I thought that this week we’d see if they could redeem themselves.

B.C., October 8, 2008

Pretty obvious, but not too bad.

This Is Just Sad

Princess Caroline of Monaco recently attended a fundraiser for Monaco’s new national museum.

And she wore toe-shoes. No, nothing Vibram-like. Worse.

Much worse.

Barefoot Jury Duty?

My wife was on jury duty last week, and was chosen for a trial. Now, I’ve never even gotten a notice for jury duty, even though over the same time period my wife has gotten notices four times, and served twice. I imagine it will happen some time, though.

And that leads to the question of whether one can manage to serve barefoot on a jury.

Barefoot Fire Bow

Survivorman’s Les Stroud has a new series of shows on right now (in the U.S.) where they re-edit the old stuff and put a new commentary on it. The series is Survivorman’s Survival Secrets.

One of the shows was on making fire, and one of the secrets for making fire with a fire bow is to do it barefoot.

Blackhand Gorge — Part 2

I actually cheated a little bit at the end of Blackhand Gorge — Part 1 when I showed you the bike path through Deep Cut (for, not as I originally wrote, the electric Interurban, but the Central Ohio Railroad, and then later the B. & O.). That wasn’t part of my barefoot hike.

When I took that picture I was on inline skates.

There are a number of places in Ohio where the rivers run “backwards”. I’ve written about Clear Creek and Salt Creek. Their current configurations came about when their original outlet was blocked by glaciers and they carved a new route in the other direction.

Blackhand Gorge, through which the Licking River flows, is another such location.

Saturday Comic

Today’s comic comes from B. C. earlier this week, September 12, 2013. It’s really rather offensive, and relies on incorrect stereotypes and myth.

But I guess that’s nothing new.

The “Barefoot” Card in Advertising

There’s a real schizophrenia amongst the public when it comes to bare feet. On the one foot, there’s the whole problem of being in public with bare feet. On the other foot, people also recognize just how comfortable and natural it is.

The latter point is so true that even advertisers try to sell their products by depicting bare feet.

Soles for Sails

Bare feet and sailboats have gone together for a long, long time. Particularly when materials were all-natural and got quite uncomfortable when wet, got slippery, and rotted, bare feet were the obvious choice.

This is pretty-well documented, as I wrote in More Barefoot Sailors.
