I haven’t been doing much hiking lately—I’ve just had other things to do and I haven’t made it as much of a priority. But I made it to Hocking Hills last week to do about 8½ miles, and then yesterday I went to Great Seal State Park and did about 5 miles.

And at Great Seal I had something happen that hasn’t happened in along time: I sliced the sole of my foot.

Chillicothe

On Saturday I headed down to Chillicothe with my son. Chillicothe has a long historical tradition, being a major location for the Hopewell Culture. Just to the east are the mountains (hills) that appear on the Great Seal of the State of Ohio. It was also Ohio’s first state capitol.

First we visited Mound City; then we climbed Sugarloaf.

Great Seal State Park

I had a great hike yesterday at Great Seal State Park. I’ve been trying to get in better shape lately, and this is one of the parks nearby (1 hour drive to near Chillicothe, OH) that provides more of a workout.

In case it is not obvious, the park is so named because the mountains (okay, for those of you with real mountains, “hills”) appear on the Great Seal of the State of Ohio.

Great Sealer’s Ghost!

Yesterday was a very nice day (and it turned out both warmer and sunnier than the forecast) and I headed down to Great Seal State Park. There were actually two reasons I chose that park to hike. First, I was expecting a phone call, and, being so close to Chillicothe, I knew I’d have phone service.

The second reason is a bit of a story. Another of the neat things about hiking barefoot is that it leads to conversations with other people that one might not otherwise have. (more…)
