We had that snow storm go through on Friday. (Draco, the Weather Channel called it.)
Well worth a barefoot tromp.
Now, I’m not talking a barefoot hike. The snow was a bit over three inches. I’m pretty much okay with snow beneath my soles, but when it gets on top of my toes I find my feet cool down way too quickly to stay out for very long.
But that doesn’t mean I can’t go out and enjoy myself for short jaunts.
As I’ve written about before, it’s like ice cream for your soles.
Sure ice cream is cold. Sure, it cools down your throat as you eat it. But I sure don’t hear anybody complaining (unless they do too much too fast, then brain freeze).
Well, your feet can easily handle 5 to 10 minutes. For quite a long time they will feel the cold without really getting cold. It’s just like with ice cream, where you can feel (and enjoy) the cold without getting cold. There is a big difference between those two uses of the word “cold”.
Such a barefoot jaunt in the snow is also invigorating and gives your soul a calm reassurance that your body really is capable of and comfortable with exploring and stretching its limits.
There’s no need to overdo it. It should be fun. Don’t push too hard and when it starts to get uncomfortable come back inside and enjoy the bit of tingle as your feet warm back up.
And actually, my favorite way of doing this is to go out and fetch some firewood, pop it on the fire, and then prop up my feet to soak up the infrared radiation emanating from the fireplace. The temperature contrasts makes it even more enjoyable.
That’s more like a hot fudge sundae.
