As summer starts to wind down, now is the time that orb-weavers go into overtime getting ready to lay eggs to last over the winter. We’ve had one outside our window for about a week now. Every day she curls up in one small corner of the window, but at night she comes out and builds a pretty spectacular web.
Here’s a close up in which you can see the details of the spider fairly well:
Although it looks as if it is sitting on the screen, it is actually on its web that is about an inch in front of the screen. You can see that here:
In this shot the light is hitting the web just right so that you can see it radiating out from the center. (It also looks darker because of the angle that my flash hit it.)
Orb weavers are fairly large spiders. This one is about one inch across.

Very scary… I dread summer because we get big spiders in our flat and I loathe them!
