Just a reminder that they will be showing a new episode of Dual Survival this evening, 9:00pm EDT. This one is entitled, “Buried Alive” and has the following description:
The hosts negotiate a frozen waterfall, build a snow cave and try to salvage what they can from an elk carcass during an adventure set in the Rocky Mountains.
It will be interesting to see how Cody navigates the cold. In last season’s shows, he used good woolen socks (but no shoes) for a while on the glacier in New Zealand, but I really don’t think that had the sort of below zero temperatures we’re going to see in Wyoming.
Let me also comment on last week’s show, which will be rerun this evening right after the new episode. Last week’s show was “Slash and Burn”, which took place in Tierra del Fuego, on the southern tip of South America.
One thing I found interesting for the new season is how Cody being barefoot is no longer considered remarkable. In the first season, a lot of time was spent talking, with great concern, about them. This season, they are simply accepted as he goes about. That is an improvement, for that is the way bare feet really ought to be considered, in daily life, too.
There were two barefoot comments, though. In the first one, they are traveling over a peat bog, and Cody remarks, “So, dude, you gotta try walking on this stuff barefoot. It’s like walking on a big sumptuous butt.” His response was pretty close to what I might have said, “I ain’t walked on too many butts to know what that feels like.” Later we actually do see Dave walking on the peat, but only because he had just crossed a river barefoot.
In the other barefoot comment, Cody says, “It’s slick out here. It’s especially slick with bare feet.” I actually tend to disagree with him a bit there. I find bare feet much better in muddy conditions when I am going uphill. My toes do a great job of grabbing. Now, downhill is a separate story. If I’m not careful, my smooth heels turn into skis, and my descent turns into a butt slide.
One final point. Cody notes that Charles Darwin was on Tierra del Fuego on his voyage with the HMS Beagle. The Fuegian Indians (Yaghan) mostly went barefoot, just as Cody did, though they occasionally also wore seal-skin moccasins. I also note that the temperatures there, around 45° with a bit of sleet, did not bother Cody at all. Nor would it bother me.
[Note: The original of this entry kept using “Dual Survivor” instead of the correct “Dual Survival”. I have now corrected it.]
