Thanks for the plug, but my America's Camping Book (Scribner's) is out of print and rare enough at used book stores. It contains plans for both my belt pack and pack frame combo and the revised edition includes my tent, designed between editions. It is nice to see a fanny pack that can be used for an overnight hike. One of my dreams I never got around to designing.

I replace most of my gear every 5 years or so. My pack, however has been the same internal-frame pack for almost 20 years. I like how the frame keeps the pack weight in one place and it doesn't "slouch" on my back. As always: great article!

I have worked in the trades for twenty years and believe me when I tell you, the transmission rate for this sort of thing is VERY low. The exact same precautions can be taken as one would take against the itch (duck parasite). Simply wash it off, I would like to add that the sole of the foot is some pretty good protection. Normally for parasite transmission you need a wound deep enough that the little buggers can get through the "horny layer" and into the subcutaneous strata. Honestly, nothing to worry about and easily treatable in a variety of ways including just waiting for them to die off. Lovin' the blog thanx!

Kids are great at telling directly when they feel fine and when they are too hot, too cold or otherwise unwell! The idea of being hard against yourself only comes up much later. So whenever children aren't complaining about cold feet there is no reason to worry they will take any damage.
It's probably reasonable for adults to take shoes/jacket for their children when going on longer trips and the temperatures aren't all that warm, because children aren't planning ahead as long as adults do. But it would be wrong to force them on your kids because "you will feel cold otherwise" - no, let the children decide when they're cold. That way they will adapt to a greater range of temperatures (of course this implies that they are going out regularly).

I have such a poor understanding of all this legal stuff, and just can't get my head around much of it. When you said "judges cheat by simply ignoring what the law says, and not following the rules of judicial construction", how is that legal? In other words, who regulates judges? Are there actual laws on the books that judges have to follow, or are they completely unregulated and can just make up whatever they want without being held accountable? So when you say "Unless you are able to read the briefs of the case, there is no way to know what the court’s opinion left out", shouldn't there be some kind of regulation that forces them not to leave anything out? And if the courts "simply ignored arguments that would have helped my case", what else in our society are they pre-deciding no matter what? Isn't the entire purpose of a judge to find the actual truth? If a very simple straightforward, and relatively trivial freedom of expression issue like this can be twisted by them, I shudder at the thought of what happens every day when the case is really a serious life and death matter, or involves passage or no passage of laws that could have drastic life and death implications on society as a whole. So what you are saying is that facts do not matter. Truth does not matter to them. And reality is whatever you want it to be, not what it really is. And in spite of the fact that these people like going by precedents, they chose to ignore the precedents set by the 1968 Youngstown and 1969 San Francisco cases. So they only like precedents that agree with the outcome they want, not those that contradict it. Once again, how is that legal, whatever that even means?

Brian,
It sounds like you're saying we should give up, because we can't win? I'm probably wrong. But every other group which eventually got laws that were arbitrarily discriminatory, have been told the same thing - until after they win. Look at what's happening in this country with sexuality equality. Though most people are not lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT), most do support equality for LGBT. Now if we can begin convincing people that fashion also should not be legislated (and that the only real purpose of shoes, especially indoors, is fashion). The only way I see this happen, is to keep on questioning the existing laws and rules (mythical and real). It takes time, perhaps lots of time (LGBT have been around nearly as long as bare feet - except maybe the "T"), but that's because people don't often think about things until they hear about them often. Then at first their thinking is, why of course the rule makes sense. But eventually, even those attitudes begin to give. But not if we don't keep questioning their validity.

For me, I think it would be great to play barefoot on grass or clay. I'd like to get back into tennis, but it's hardcourt, so I think I'll be wearing a brand new pair of classic white Nike City Courts. I know I could play barefoot, but I would prefer to save the soles for walking, running and hiking.

That's what is great about going barefoot. My shoes are still brand new after 2 years and on the rare occasion that I wear them, my feet, ankles and legs are much stronger inside the shoe.

The soles will build up and wear down, to a certain point that's no reason to worry. Just balance out the hiking and tennis playing to find an optimum!

You might want to look at huaraches like those xeroshoes.com sells for this kind of idea. Unfortunately it is a shoe, and 4mm of rubber at that, but your foot is nowhere near as constricted in them compared to "tennis shoes".

Bob, I know you've already given this subject a lot of thought, but I worry that the more times judges cheat and decide against barefooters, the more precedent there is for upholding these arbitrary rules, and the more it reenforces the idea that bare feet in public places is dangerous and/or improper. I know a lot of people who don't go barefoot in public -- except at home or beach, etc. -- are sympathetic to the idea of bare feet. But an awful lot of people are not. I don't know where the balance is at the moment. I've been hoping it was tipping our way, but I'm not sure. I'd love to see a judge parse the difference between bare feet in flip flops and bare feet on the ground. Is it all seems to come down to a thin layer of rubber.

Very interesting because it highlights the difference between doing something totally man made and contrived vs the natural world. The man made "game" emphasizes a very high coefficient of friction between the foot and the surface to change direction or stop quickly. One could argue that the Cf (coefficient of friction) of human skin and clay/concrete is nowhere near the Cf of rubber and clay/concrete, so pushing fast and hard while BF is going to result in painful wear. However that same limit may have a benefit because you may not wind up being the best tennis player but since you are not stopping / starting or turning as fast you are preserving the rest of your joints!

I do the same thing for certain activities, which is annoying, but better than wearing down my feet. I find it funny that most people wear shoes to protect their feet from becoming callused (among other things) whereas barefooters sometimes wear shoes to protect our calluses.
