I just happened to catch a news story on the local TV news last evening that I thought had an interesting example of casual bare feet, something we seem to see less and less of these days (and particularly so as the weather cools down).
The story itself is not a nice story.
The story is about a man trying to lure children into a van, Strangers Try to Lure Boy Into Van With Toy and Candy. The kid was smart enough to keep his distance, and report it.
FAIRFIELD COUNTY — Extra patrols have been set up after authorities say a man and two boys tried to lure a child into a van.
It happened Sunday evening in the Meadowmoore neighborhood near Pickerington.
Authorities say a man and two boys attempted to lure the child into the van by promising candy and a football.
The boy ran into his house on Church View Drive and told his dad who looked for the van but couldn’t find it.
Authorities got a similar call in the nearby Chevington North neighborhood last month.
The Fairfield Sheriff’s office does not have a make and model for the van or a license plate number.
They’ve set up extra patrols for the community.
It was rather interesting, though, when the news people went to interview the boy and neighbors. They must have done it yesterday morning, when the temperature was probably around 55°. And they talked to him in (and showed him using) a local playground.
These days it is rare enough just to see a kid playing barefoot. It is also nice to see that this boy is not intimidated off by what many people would consider cool temperatures. (It is also interesting to see that the reporters did not consider it worthy of note.)
We can see that he is dressed just perfectly for cooler weather barefooting. The hoodie and jeans provide the warmth for the body, and the feet and hands do just fine. It actually helps that the feet and hands are being used, which pumps warm blood into both.
It’s also not the case that he was wearing some sort of shoes and took them off just for the swingset. Here he is in the slide area.
Looks perfect to me. And no horrified speculation about the surface he is standingn on.
He was even able (zounds!) to run around and climb steps.
What won’t bare feet be capable of next?!?
