The cover story in the May/June issue of Backwoodsman Magazine features Cody Lundin, of Dual Survival (and other general survivalist) fame.
It is well worth getting a copy of the magazine.
The article includes both an introduction to Cody (as if we really needed one), and then a question and answer section.
Obviously, his bare feet came up a bit.
Here’s what they said:
One aspect of Lundin’s life that has been well-documented is his desire to live a barefoot lifestyle. He has stated that “It’s a lifestyle choice” and that “It’s very comfortable to me”. It’s a personal challenge to himself and he doesn’t recommend it to anyone else. Cody’s also quick to remind people that shoes are a sort of a recent Homosapien invention and that people had healthier feet before them. He also states that “time and history is on my side”.
In the Q&A, there is quite a bit of discussion about the whole survival skill industry, and how anybody can put out a youtube video. But how can you tell if they know what they are talking about?
Cody points out that he has a list of things to ask an instructor on his website.
He also talks about some of his mentors, and particularly singles out Mors Kochanski.
Mors is the one that taught him the survival shelter he used in one of the Dual Survival episodes.
I think Mors is responsible for making the phrase bushcrafting popular but hasn’t received the credit he deserves for it. A lot of things that he has done have often been overlooked throughout the years. On the Dual Survival “Nova Scotia” episode we built a structure called the “super shelter” that Mors taught me. My way of honoring him was to call it the term he called it.
I loved seeing that shelter (it’s the one that used the clear plastic to capture the radiant heat from the fire and was super toasty). In fact, I would have loved to see it again and again in later episodes.
Anyways, it is well worth looking around to find the magazine for the article. (It also has other fine articles in it.)
Folks are still wondering about Season 3 of Dual Survival.
Dave Canterbury is not returning due to other engagements. Cody’s new partner is definitely not anybody that we are familiar with from the Discovery Channel. So, it is not Mykel Hawke, Bear Grylls, or Lest Stroud. Really.
But Cody is not saying who it is, saying that that is up to the Discovery Channel.
Here is what Cody says (from his facebook page):
In regards to my new partner, he (first clue) is a genuine Special Operations warrior. He was hired by the Discovery Channel, thus the Discovery Channel will decide when the time is right to announce him.
Supposedly, they already have two episodes in the can.
There is a lot to look forward to coming up with Cody and Dual Survival!
