On Friday, I found this little guy wandering around my yard:
Eastern Box Turtle
That is an Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina). This is actually the first time I’ve ever found a turtle in my yard.
About an hour after I took that picture, I went back to see if I could find him again. I couldn’t.
Speedy little guy, eh?
My mother would applaud you for taking such a great photo and sharing it about Box Turtles. She has been raising them for years. Now she is on to Tortuses!
It reminds me of the near accident I had with one last year on a training run. It jumped out of no where and I didn’t want to step on it, so I flopped sideways so I didn’t step on it. Mom would have killed me.
He’s cute! I used to go looking for turtles in the woods as a boy. Most people don’t realize that in addition to being faster than they appear, box turtles are quite good at hiding.
That box turtle is very cool!
